Fantastic Mr Bean

01 December 2020

For all lovers of Roald Dahl this rendition of Fantastic Mr Bean from the Fantastic Mr Fox story is an easy read and fun for 7 and 9 year olds. The pen drawings at the beginning of each chapter remind me of Dahl’s books and indicate to the reader something of what might happen next.

Children who love ‘doing plays’ will immerse themselves in the story line and characters of Lachie, his brother Frank and the other children in his class. Ten chapters is a good size for this book as young readers are able to pace their reading to regular chapter-size chunks and still complete it after a few comfortable reading sessions.

It has a good climax at the end with the frightening arrival of a bee that could seriously endanger Areta, the young girl allergic to bees. Lachie and Frank save the day and the play.

A soft short novel in paperback, easy to hold and easy-to-read font.

It’s nice to have author notes and set of interesting words for further discussion after reading.
