This is a beautiful board book in which author/illustrator, Gavin Bishop, tells and shows a mihi, an introduction. Over 18 pages in just 19 words in te reo Maori, Bishop mentions canoe, mountain, river, marae, tribe, family, mother, father, and finishes with ko ahau tenei, “this is me.”
The simplicity of the book is its strength – lovely solid illustrations, with good strong colour and plenty of white space on which they stand out. The colour of the word on each double-page spread matches in with the colour of the subject on the page.
The book would be a great gift to new parents and babies. It also encourages readers to think about their own mihi and links to their land and whanau.
