My Bum is So Cheeky!

12 April 2022

This is the fourth book in Dawn McMillan’s hilarious picture book series about a boy and the myriad of problems he has with his bum.

This lad shows some signs of ADHD but blames his bum for getting him into trouble. It can’t sit still, it makes rude noises and even does some shape-shifting. Mum and dad come to the rescue with a trampoline, the bum can safely work off some energy and the lad sets goals to win at the Olympics in trampolining.

The text has a wonderful rhythm and rhyme, making it perfect for reading aloud and delighting young children. Some of the text is in colour and different fonts, adding interest to the words. Some of the text is shaped to match the meaning e.g.the word jumping is literally jumping off the line.

Ross Kinnaird’s illustrations are bright, vivid and the characters’ emotions are clearly shown in the facial expressions.

This book has a positive message about behaviour management: the parents found a solution in getting a trampoline rather than constant punishment for exasperating antics.

If laughter is the best medicine then this book is perfect for generating a laugh and escaping life for a while.
