The Rhyming Pirate
This is a fun book that is written with a lot of rhythm and rhyme. The illustrations are vibrant and fun as to be expected from artist Glenn Jones. The front of the book poses a challenge with kiwiana treasures for the reader to find on each page. The poor Pirate is trying to find a word that rhymes with carrot and shares his frustration with the reader. In the end my class were shouting at the pirate as he tried so many different words before realising the obvious rhyme was with him all the time. A fun way to teach children about rhyming and how we can still read words when they ‘aren’t real’. It would be a great challenge to see how many ‘nonsense words’ they could come with as a follow up activity.
