WORD Christchurch Festival

“With everything that has been developing in relation to the global COVID-19 pandemic,” says WORD Programme Director Rachael King, we have been forced to rethink our schedule of events and how we can best serve our audience, our city, and New Zealand’s literary community.”

Instead of the planned international festival, the organisation is devising a new, grassroots, festival programme. It will showcase New Zealand writers and books, with a particular focus on supporting writers and readers in Christchurch. It will include many favourite festival fixtures, such as free family events, the New Regent Street Pop-Up and the Great WORD Debate, but the overall festival will be more intimate.

The next international biennial WORD Christchurch Festival will now take place in August 2021 provided international travel opens up. “Whatever happens,” says King, “things will not be the same, and we will embrace the challenge of finding new and innovative ways to do what we do best – delivering world-class literary festivals and events.”

WORD appreciates the support from their audiences who turn out to events large and small and who understand that words are important, world-changing, provocative and comforting.

We are closely following Ministry of Health guidelines regarding the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) and will make any adjustments we need to, including on just how we deliver the events to our audience, ensuring the safety of everyone.
