This exciting tale follows Awatea and his brother Tai during a summer of mystery and adventure. They’re staying on Nan and Pop’s farm with endless time and curiosity to explore. Along for the ride is their trusty sidekick, Carrot the parrot.
Their interest is piqued when they hear about the disappearance of the enigmatic local, Mr Carol. After rummaging in his shed, an old satchel is found holding objects that hint toward a different version of events regarding Mr Carol.
Awatea’s Secret captures the essence of being a child, free to roam, make discoveries and create fun without technology. There are many humorous and charming moments that will resonate with children with a love of the outdoors and getting up to mischief.
Te reo Māori kupu (words) are well incorporated and this story would suit a young boy wanting a suspenseful chapter book. More of Awatea’s adventures can be read in the Awatea’s Treasure and Awatea and the Kawa Gang.
The author, Fraser Smith, has brought his love of education, the environment and hands-on learning to the book. Fraser is a school principal, a keen outdoorsman and has a love of telling stories through books and songs.
