Opening sentence
My name is Theodore Brown. If I had friends, they'd probably call me Theo.
Theodore Brown is navigating life with a unique talent. When looking someone in the eye, he sees a number which foretells exactly how many days he’ll spend with them. To Theodore, this number quirk is feeling less like a gift and more like a curse. Since his Dad died, he’s kept to himself but he’s starting to wonder if he’s missing out on life. Then, along comes Lil Sanchez. She’s bold, artistic, and one-of-a-kind. The number tells him she’s only around for summer, but something about their dynamic keeps them in the same orbit for a life-changing summer.

This realistic love-story is aimed at 14-18 year olds and is perfect for teens who love a coming-of-age story with a twist. The themes of connection, mental health, identity and relationships create a spark that will keep you turning the page. Reading it feels like chatting to your best mate about life - it's funny, sad, surprising and warm all wrapped up in one. Any readers who’ve ever felt alone, or like an outsider will totally relate to the story and characters.

'Counting Down with Theodore Brown' is the debut novel of Daniel Devenney. Hailing from Ireland, he’s a passionate bookseller now based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
