Frank the Monster

In 'Frank the Monster' by Mats Strandberg and Sofia Falkenhem, quiet bookworm Frank feels completely out of place in his sports-loving family. When no friends show up to his birthday—except his elderly neighbor Alice, and her dog Wolf, - his life takes a bizarre turn. After a bite from Wolf, Frank unexpectedly begins transforming into a monster.

Told through short, staccato sentences, the writing style creates a fast, rhythm. Because it is a short story, the plot flips very quickly from normal life straight into the existence of monsters. This rapid pacing and sudden shift into meeting creatures means the story can occasionally be a little hard to follow.

However, it ends on a cliffhanger about whether Frank will ever control his new shifting powers. It combines themes of belonging with a spooky atmosphere. Due to mild content—like child ghosts and a couple kissing—it is best suited for slightly older kids who can keep up with the fast-moving plot.
