Opening sentence
Ten-year-old Maddison McQueen cycled slowly along the road as her red and white Border Collie, Ruby, trotted loose on the footpath beside her.
Kate Gordon-Smith's Maddison McQueen and the Disappearing Dogs is the second title in the engaging Red Collie Mysteries, a fun and accessible series for readers aged 7 to 10. While this book is second in the series, following Maddison McQueen and the Cupcake Mystery, both can be enjoyed as standalone stories.

The books are thoughtfully designed with dyslexia-friendly fonts and layout, making them more accessible to a wide range of readers.

Set in the author’s hometown of Wānaka, this series is a great way to introduce younger readers to the mystery, crime-fighting genre, with a young New Zealand girl as the heroine.

Maddison McQueen and the Disappearing Dogs would work well as a read-aloud. As a class book, it would allow opportunities to analyse character development, plot structure, and narrative voice.
