Opening sentence
“Better go on the uphill side of those boulders.” Ben Coles’ father pointed. “Safest way."
Ben is a typical 14 year old who enjoys football, socialising, and girls. On a tramping trip in the mountains with his father, he decides to take a shortcut through unstable terrain which leads to a severe injury and lifelong consequences. 'Stepping Up' follows Ben’s adjustment to his new life, his recovery, and his changing relationships with friends and family. After a few setbacks and crises of confidence, he gradually adapts to his circumstances.

When he meets a girl with a similar injury, he realises that he is not unique in his challenges. With her help, he steadily develops the confidence and maturity to continue his life where he left off.

This is a very readable book. It flows really well and is so interesting that it didn’t take me long to read. The details of the procedures Ben undergoes are absorbing and well-researched; if I have a criticism, it is that I can’t help feeling that Ben is an ideal teenager, with ideal parents, an ideal lifestyle and ideal friends. I suspect the reality of going through this trauma would take far more of a toll on everyone. Having said that, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it, particular to readers 12 years and older.
