Opening sentence
Once, not so long ago, in a place not so far away, on a quiet dusty country road, a man was driving a horse and cart.
'Zephyr Follows the Stars' is a mix of danger, adventure, and magic, and is the first in a series. It follows a young girl Zephyr, and a large part of the narrative revolves around her relationship with her father and uncle, and how they work together to overcome the challenges they face as they undertake a rescue journey. The story conveys the protectiveness of her father and uncle, but also how they develop trust in the capabilities she has, and how she can help.
I initially took a bit to get engaged with this book. I found the cover and overview didn't particularly appeal to me on a personal level, and some of the structure felt a little 'clunky'. However, after the first three chapters I began to enjoy the story, and found it to be a good read overall.
I would recommend this as a good book suitable for middle/upper primary level, particularly young readers who enjoy adventure and the aura of magic. Most of the sentence structure is relatively short, which makes it easier to read. The book works well as a stand alone, but you can also sense that there are more adventures to follow.
