With over three decades of experience in primary education, including serving as principal of Ōtūru School in Kaitāia, Smith has dedicated his career to engaging young minds through culturally resonant narratives.

His debut novel, Awatea’s Treasure, originated from campfire tales shared during school trips, capturing the imaginations of students and leading to its publication. Smith's works often reflect his own experiences growing up in remote areas, emphasising a connection to the land and sea. Smith's writing is characterised by its authentic portrayal of rural New Zealand life, often set in the 1960s. His stories emphasise themes of adventure, self-reliance, and the bond between humans and nature.

Awatea’s Treasure was recognised as a Storylines Notable Book in 2018 and shortlisted for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults in the Best First Book category. Smith continued the series with Awatea and the Kawa Gang (2019) and Awatea’s Secret (2024), along with editions in te reo Māori: Te Taonga Huna o Awatea (2024), Awatea Rātou ko te Kapa Kawa (2024).

Beyond his literary pursuits, Smith is a passionate educator and musician. At Ōtūru School, he championed hands-on learning experiences, integrating environmental stewardship into the curriculum. He is also an accomplished musician, performing in a band and incorporating music into his storytelling sessions.
