When you stood deep inside the tunnel, you could hear the mountain groaning overhead.
Below is an amazing novel written by an incredible New Zealand writer David Hill. This book will keep readers on the edge of their seat and begging for more.
Below is focused around the main characters Liam and Imogen, who both have very different views on the brand new tunnel that is being built. Liam thinks that the tunnel is amazing, as are the people who are working on it including his dad. After all, it'll be so much easier to get to the other side of the mountain. Imogen, on the other hand, hates what the tunnel is doing to the mountain and the environment.
Liam is fed up with imogen's comments about the tunnel in class and in school so he decides that the only way to convince her that the tunnel isn't so bad, is to take her inside. So when the tunnel collapses the two of them must put aside their differences if they want to make it out alive. As they sit in almost complete darkness they start to wonder if they will ever make it back out into the light.
One of my personal favourite characters is Imogen. This is because she has a strong sense of what she thinks is wrong or right, she also doesn't let people squash her ideas, thoughts or opinions. Saying this, Liam is also a good character in the fact that he stands by his opinions. He also learns over the course of the story that even if he thinks that he is right, he still has to look at things from other people's perspective.
One of the many things that I like about this book is that the characters really open up about themselves in the book and you really can imagine what they are going through. You find out about their friends and family as well. I like this because you can really start to build a connection with the people in the book.
The book is written in a very interesting way. For example, sometimes it refers to mogen as “The girl.” In my opinion I think that this is a very clever way to write because it conveys Liam's feelings about the situation. Like if he is feeling sad or hopeless, the book refers to Imogen as “the girl” but when he is excited or happy it refers to Imogen as Imogen.
I would recommend this book to kids ages 10+ and who love an existing story full of nerve racking twists. David Hill is an amazing author and has many other incredible books that will be perfect for fans of this book - and for anyone who likes a good book with great characters and a fabulous plot.
