Hunter is a short book set in the New Zealand bush, published in 2004. It's a dual timeline novel about a boy named Hunter and his special connection with a girl called Jordan.

Hunter has the gift of sight and he has visions of moa so powerful chiefs take him moa hunting. They use him like a tool to find what's said to be the last moa for them to kill, but while resting in a cave he has a vision not of the moa but of a girl and two boys beside her hurling down into the lake he’s at, in a plane. Now he feels he has to stay and help her survive using this special bond between them.

The setting is a big part of the story because the bush feels wild and unpredictable. It makes everything more tense like anything could go wrong at any time. Using the suspense and tension the book creates, it lures you to read more and makes you feel like you're there with them as they try to survive and strengthen the bond between them.

A big idea in the book is survival. Hunter has to rely on himself and make smart choices or he will be killed, but his desire to help the mystery girl is strong. She is relying on him or her and her brothers will die. Fear is also important because it affects how they think and what they do. You can see how being scared can either help you or make things worse.

The writing is simple and easy to follow. It’s a quick read; even though it’s not super complicated, it still keeps you interested and makes you want to know what happens next.

I think this book is good for teenagers, especially if you like survival or action type stories. You don’t need to know anything before reading it, which makes it easy to get into.

Overall, I think Hunter is a good book. It’s simple but still interesting, and it shows how people react under pressure. I’d recommend it if you want something short but still intense.
