Opening sentence
Avis had answered one of the three mental maths challenge questions when the vibrations started at the top of her rib cage.
This book is the sequel to Avis and the Promise of the Dragons. It is, however, easy to pick up as a stand alone as I did, knowing nothing of its predecessor.
This book has a healthy mix of magic and fantasy. While the themes are fantastical the author engages the reader with some beautiful imagery, particularly in respect to Humbert the dragon.
The story is fast paced and centres around Avis, her dragon and a sack holding a dragon's tear that they use to communicate with one another. The story hinges on helping the mother Kraken protect their ocean from an oil rig.
Girls will particularly enjoy reading this book as Avis is quick witted and full of courage but is also normal, with many character flaws and mistakes she makes along the way.
A great young readers book with short chapters but can also be read aloud. It’s generally fast paced and a joy to read.
