Opening sentence
The swamp stretched out in all directions, grey, miserable and endless.
This action-adventure story features mice and other creatures who are on a quest, aided by a magical staff. The artwork on the front cover and throughout is absolutely stunning and immediately gives the impression that you are going to enjoy this novel. Even the title page is decorated with exquisitely drawn pine cones and sprigs of spruce. And the illustrations continue throughout the book, giving added interest, along with the use of fun fonts for occasional words, which young readers find so appealing. Although a little reminiscent of the Geronimo Stilton series, this book is black and white.
Aimed at beginning chapter book readers, a little sophisticated language is peppered throughout to develop their vocabulary, such as rapscallion, arrogant, lumbered and bedraggled.
Whilst reading, the Deltora Quest series popped into my mind and Bravepaw is likely to appeal to readers who enjoy this style of series.
I couldn't help feeling that I would have understood the story a little better had I read the first book in this series. After finishing the book, I'm still not sure what sort of creature Dollop is. It mentions that he's a puffling, and the only pufflings I've heard of previously are baby puffins, but I don't think that's the case here. (Editor's note: Dollop is depicted on the book cover in the main character's pocket - but your guess is as good as mine!)
