Opening sentence
They were arguing about him again. It was always about him.
Eye of the Dragon is a moving and imaginative story about a boy named Thomas who struggles with a stutter and the challenges of growing up in a blended family. His loyal dog Lucy is his only real friend—until he discovers what he believes is a dragon. His friend Huhana, deeply rooted in Māori culture, teaches him that the dragon is actually a taniwha, a guardian spirit. This mythical being becomes a powerful symbol of courage and protection in Thomas’ life.
The book thoughtfully explores bullying, showing how both children and adults can be victims and perpetrators. Thomas’ journey is inspiring as he begins to stand up to his bullies and rebuild connections with his stepfather and estranged father. The taniwha becomes not only a protector of Thomas but of the entire town, reflecting themes of healing and unity.
Susan Brocker does a beautiful job weaving Māori traditions into the story, with Huhana and her whānau offering wisdom and warmth. The book subtly touches on how bullies often carry pain themselves, though this theme could have been developed further. Overall, Eye of the Dragon is a powerful tale of courage, belonging, and the importance of trusting those who care for you.
I feel that this book is too short to be a read aloud, however it would be great as a small novel with reading groups.
