Opening sentence
Water WOOSHED up her nose and into her ears.
The first thing that struck me about this book was the vibrant, cool, colourful cover, beautifully drawn by Amanda Sutcliffe. The interior illustrations are equally awesome thanks to Jeremy Dia. I love the cute kids and especially the picture of Bob the dog on page 66 after his visit to the groomer (full shampoo and set!). All the illustrations fit the text perfectly.
The text is written in rhyme: to write a whole book in rhyme is not easy to do, but that’s what you get with Lulu La Ru!
There are words written in BOLD, UPPER CASE letters, with different sized and coloured fonts which make it a fun read!
This is definitely a very ‘girly’ book. Lulu is quite vain as you will see when she packs ‘posh clothes’ for their hike, fusses over her skin and panics about messing up her hair on the water-slide. She takes the girls shopping and they have their hair and nails done as well as getting their ears pierced. What lucky girls!
But oh dear… although the Super Terrific Extra Parent has done lots of brave things in her previously single life we find out in this story that she has a fear of heights! So hang on to your hats and enjoy the fun adventures Lulu has with her kids as she faces her fears, gets outside her comfort zone and realises that home with her family is the best place to be.
