Tākapu lives where the land meets the sea.
Being one who accompanied my father on many trips to see the Murawai Gannet Colony, I was delighted to read and review this book. Ned Barraud’s 'Tākapu the Lone Hunter' is a narrative non-fiction picture book that injects thrilling energy into New Zealand's coastal wildlife as Barraud highlights the physical toll of biological survival through a single Australasian gannet.
The story’s core theme is the dedication required for parental duty. Leaving her mate to guard their chick, the mother Tākapu embarks on a hunting mission to find food for her chick. Barraud showing her plunging into the sea at 100 kilometres per hour. His split-perspective illustrations — simultaneously capturing the world above and below the surface — create the calm skies against the reality of an ocean feeding frenzy.
Environmental vulnerability emerges as a vital theme. Amidst sharks and massive whales, the lone bird navigates a thin line between predator and prey. Despite the ocean’s hazards, Barraud builds the reader's respect for the bird's resilience. It is brilliant, a blend of nature and science with tension that keeps the marine world feeling beautifully alive.
