The Ghost and the Girl is the first novel in a new series by Jacqueline Harvey, which will leave readers wanting more, with a good mix of mystery, adventure, and a touch of the supernatural. Thirteen-year-old Josephine Eloise Thomas (Jet) moves from Sydney to a picturesque but crumbling château in rural France, with her father and stepmother. Here she is hoping to feel closer to her late mother, who passed away when she was young. The setting is enchanting, and the author paints it beautifully, from the sweeping countryside to the quaint village where one can enjoy the delicious French pastries Jet indulges in, with the patisserie also adding a touch of romance in the character of Gabriel, the charming grandson of the local baker.

The excitement begins when Josephine stumbles upon a locket containing the ghost of Louis XVII, a young, royal spirit whom Jet finds as frustrating as he is fascinating. Louis is a “pain in the bum”, but readers will love the comedy his character brings. Together, Jet and Gabriel start to unravel the mystery of the ghost, Jet’s new neighbours in Chateau Du Lac, and secrets of her own family’s past.

I love how this novel blends comedy, a hint of romance, and mystery, all in a beautiful French setting described in vivid detail. It is as though Jacqueline Harvey’s creations are growing up with her readers! The intriguing plot, interesting characters, and vibrant setting kept me hooked in one sitting. I look forward to seeing how these characters develop as this is a series I will be following.
