The dove's name was Montgomery and he was a bird with a very bitter disposition.
As a teacher, I’m always on the lookout for books that captivate young readers and spark meaningful discussions. The Strange and Unlikely Tale of Montgomery the Mysterious Bird of Mystery by Anthony Elworthy is one such treasure.

The story follows a boy who visits his grandfather, Gramps, at the retirement home every Wednesday after school. These visits are the highlight of the week for both. Gramps, who affectionately calls his grandson “Boy,” shares lively stories from his past, claiming to have lived many exciting lives. His most captivating tale recalls his time as The Astonishing Alfredo, a famous magician, and his performing partner, Montgomery—the Mysterious Bird of Mystery—who ended each show with a song.

However, fame changes Montgomery into an envious, uncontrollable star-in-the-making, leading to a twist even Gramps struggles to explain.

This engaging chapter book highlights the power of storytelling and the importance of intergenerational connections. Elworthy’s prose flows effortlessly, making it perfect for reading aloud. With themes of family bonds, memory, and imagination, it invites classroom discussions about truth and fiction.

A thoroughly entertaining read for junior readers and adults alike—this book is not to be missed.
