Opening sentence
At home on the farm, left to rust in the grass, are old bits of things with mysterious pasts.
'At Home on the Farm' features a quintessential New Zealand landscape, complete with farm animals, a rusting tractor, and rolling hills of dry grass. In this rhyming story, the farm is described as being “as dry as a bone,” with cracks in the earth, and rich descriptive language sets the scene. Each page introduces a different form of life on the farm, bringing variety and interest to the story.

The detailed illustrations create a strong sense of space, scale, and movement — from swans taking flight and wind-swept macrocarpa trees to blowflies buzzing around sleeping dogs. Readers feel immersed in the heat of a dry farm; you'll feel like seeking relief in the cool barn, where a “hungry and lean” barn cat waits.

This story will become a favourite for reading aloud, with its rhythmic prose and engaging illustrations capturing the imagination of young readers.
