My First Ikura

'My First Ikura' is about a girl's journey into womanhood, and her connections back to the earth and her ancestors through Māori traditions. The book embraces the special nature of female menstruation and encourages the acceptance of periods as a normal part of life, not something to be hidden or embarrassed by. It guides the reader through the associated traditions, and shows how all whānau have a place within them. The illustrations have been beautifully done, and help to create a special, gentle feel to the book. It is presented in English, but also has many te reo Māori words woven in. There is a glossary at the back to help understanding the relationship between the two languages. The book is also available in full te reo Māori.
