Opening sentence
It was a fresh and shiny morning in Narlybone. Early birds were enjoying worms... while Detective Stanley slept in.
This is a vibrant, easy read that would be captivating for young readers, including adults.
The exquisite detail in the illustrations is what instantly grabs your attention with this book. The gold reflective illustrations on the cover makes you curious to see what the book is going to be about, and as you read it, there is as much information in the pictures, as in the words.
The graphic novel is about a detective dog called Stanley, who is retired, but gets invited to solve an art mystery at the museum. I would recommend this book to ages 8 and up because of the more mature vocabulary used throughout. Another reason I would recommend this book to ages 8 and up is because each picture is worth a thousand words - they contain clues to help you figure out who the criminal is, making the reader feel like a detective too.
This book is the first part in a three book series. I am curious to see what the next two books are like and whether they are as engaging and mysterious as this one. No doubt they are!
There are also two free activity sheets, inspired by the artists in the story, for free on the Flying Eye Books website.
