I love how this book gets young readers thinking, encouraging them to work out who the duo will encounter next from the clues (and the cleverly illustrated hints). The reveal pages feature names in te reo Māori and English, accompanied by a snippet of information and a few funny lines that are sure to bring a smile and a laugh (“What?! Bite my bottom and they’re in big trouble!”)

The illustrations are full of movement and action; you can almost feel the crash of the waves. Each page is a visual delight, with the sea creatures and the ocean captured expertly in vibrant colour and painterly expression.

There is a lot going on in this book, and I love it all: rhyme, humour, facts, and the conservation tips at the end, which highlight ways that we can “act now before it’s too late to save our sea friends from a terrible fate.”
