Opening sentence
I remember the day I fell in love with horses.
'Horses and Us' is a beautiful book that will be enjoyed not just by horse lovers but anyone who loves stories of courage, resilience and determination. The book is made up of 23 true stories from across Aotearoa, all about the amazing things that can be achieved when horses and humans forge a tight bond.
The first story is the author's own account of her bond with her horse, Billy, and how he helped her. This sets the stage for the rest of the book, which tells many intimate stories of horses and their bonds with humans, all of them different in many ways, but invariably special. The book has beautiful illustrations, mixed in with photographs and other pictures created by Kiwi artists using different types of mixed media.
This book is aimed at tweens and young adults, but will be well-loved by anyone. It would make a good read-aloud for a class.
