How can we celebrate Matariki? Let's look to the stars!
First published in paperback form in 2022, this board book edition of 'Matariki' is a perfect introduction to the Matariki star cluster. It begins by encouraging readers to think about ways to celebrate Matariki, looking to the stars for guidance. Each star in the Matariki cluster is featured in a double-page spread, with only the star's name and illustrations that depict its meaning. Small details, such as a kākāpō peeking out from the leaves and crabs and kina hidden throughout the artwork, provide plenty of visual interest to engage young readers. These pages invite readers to pause and reflect on the significance of each star, while also serving as valuable starting points for discussion.

The second half of the book provides more information about each star, along with ways to celebrate their meaning. For example, Pōhutukawa, the star associated with remembrance, encourages people to honour loved ones who have passed by sharing stories and looking at photographs together. Beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully designed, this book introduces the stars of Matariki in a way that is accessible to young readers. By encouraging reflection, connection, and celebration, it provides families with a meaningful starting point for exploring the traditions and values of Matariki together.
