Opening sentence
Look at that spiky creature lying in the sunshine.
From first contact with the cover, 'Roarrr!' invites exploration and engagement. Raised and textured illustrations of ancient native birds and animals cover the outside. The end pages are covered in beautiful illustrations, from the bones and skeletons of the opening pages to the closing pages which show the creatures as they were, with a pronunciation guide for their English and Māori names.

The book is bursting with useful information about the seventeen different creatures featured, and also includes funny little asides. Each page includes biological facts, physical descriptions, historical details, where in Aotearoa they lived, and notes about how they interacted with their environment. A particularly useful illustration of each creature compares them to a bottle of milk or a house, which makes it easy for children to comprehend their comparative sizes.

'Roarrr!' is a treasure trove for readers who love knowing facts, but is also so enticing that other readers will find it enjoyable. The main illustrations on each page are large enough that the book could be read to a group of children, but individual readers could also immerse themselves in its pages.
