Opening sentence
The 'ava ceremony is a Samoan custom that welcomes visitors to a village.
'Sauniga o le 'Ava Samoa' is a great introduction to the 'ava ceremony for anyone that has no knowledge of it. It is written in a simple, easy to understand manner, and features both Samoan and English text on each page. The illustrations fit well with the theme, and at the back of the book there is a two page spread to show the full seating arrangement inside the fale for the ceremony. There are also three additional pages that explore the folklore behind the 'ava plant. This would fit well within a primary school non-fiction section, or for students and young people who have Samoan heritage or are interested in Samoan culture.
