Opening sentence
He Māori ahau – a simple phrase yet one I avoided for much of my life, initially because I didn’t understand its meaning and, later, because I felt I wasn’t Māori enough to say it.
Mike McRoberts has written a brave and honest book about his personal journey learning te reo Māori and the steps he has taken to renew his connection to his culture and his marae. His journey hasn’t been an easy one and unfortunately is one that far too many people will be able to identify with.
By sharing his story, McRoberts gives a face to urbanisation and the socio-economic factors which have driven language loss. He openly shares the impact of growing up disconnected from te reo Māori and his anxiety about being unable to speak te reo Māori. Learning a language as an adult is hard. Learning a language that you feel that you ‘ought to know’ is even harder.
By focussing on what he has gained from reconnecting to his turangawaewae, McRoberts’ story is a celebration of Monte Ohia’s “whānau transformation through education.” McRoberts’ story is inspirational and powerful. He offers hope that it is never too late to start the journey of learning. Tūwhitia te hopo!
