Opening sentence
On the morning of 4 September 1863, from their pā at Whakapuaka just out of Whakatū (Nelson), Hūria Mātenga and her husband Hemi watched a storm blowing across Tai-o-Aorere (Tasman Bay).
'Survive Aotearoa' is the second title in Bronwyn Wall’s nonfiction series, following on from 'Explore! Aotearoa', unveiling sixteen remarkable true stories of resilience and grit from all over Aotearoa and Antarctica. Wall creatively brings to life the misadventures of Otago gold miners, castaways from the Dundonald ship in 1807, as well as rescuers, starting with the 1863 heroism of Hūria Mātenga at the sinking of the Delaware.
The book is visually stunning with just the right combination of illustrations and historic photographs, including a detailed map of New Zealand to track each journey. Andrews provides detailed watercolours that perfectly capture the peril of our wild coastlines, forests, and mountains.
Wall’s text makes non-fiction exciting for younger readers, with lots of adventure. The book celebrates themes of teamwork, ingenuity, and determination, and is a tribute to the courage of New Zealanders. I absolutely loved this book!
