Opening sentence
The sky was turquoise, and the Pacific Ocean bright green.
Olivia Aroha Giles spins a compelling narrative which spans over time with several protagonists to keep the reader engaged in the lives of a Wellington family facing the aftermaths of several tragedies. Rife with secrets and mystery, The Eldest Girl delves into the complexities of family, sisterhood and the bonds which hold a shaky family together.

While all flawed, the connections which tie the family members together are clear as they grapple with the latest family scandal: an overseas relative that appears on their doorstep. The novel highlights how families band together at difficult times as the main characters face issues with loss, infidelity, addiction and financial troubles. These characters have been crafted masterfully with intricate backstories and diverse interests that are sure to capture all readers.

Although the writing is accessible (and perhaps better suited at times) for younger high schoolers and intermediate students, the themes may be too mature for some of their tastes.
