Opening sentence
High on a raggedy grey clifftop, a fearsome dragon prowled the rugged terrain.
It takes immense dedication to bring a fantasy world to life, and I greatly admire this new author's achievement in crafting this debut novel.
The core concept here is a sweeping adventure centred on dragons who must learn the importance of collaboration to survive. This theme of unity is clearly conveyed throughout the narrative, promoting the powerful notion of achieving more when working together. My personal highlight was the concept of 'mindspeak,' the telepathic communication system used by the dragons, which added a fascinating layer to their interactions.
The prose frequently uses strong, evocative vocabulary, offering readers words like 'manoeuvred,' 'ravenous,' 'pummelling,' and 'fatigue.' While the story’s thematic messaging is very clear and consistently reinforced, some readers might prefer a more subtle approach to the central moral. However, for those who appreciate an explicit focus on core themes, this will be a welcome strength.
Maybe one of the paragraphs on pages 152/153 was intended to be left out. Although this particular style wasn't entirely my cup of tea, the author has clearly created a fascinating world. I know this novel, in dyslexia friendly typeface, with black and white illustrations, will find many enthusiastic fans, who will look forward to seeing the release of the second instalment in the series.
