'The Hatchling' is a fast-paced and imaginative Aotearoa New Zealand adventure story that follows Quinn, a curious and likeable boy who discovers a mysterious egg that hatches into something far more unusual — and dangerous — than he ever expected. From the moment the creature appears, Quinn is thrown into a wild mix of excitement, responsibility, and fear as he tries to figure out what it is and how to keep everyone safe.

I read this book in its entirety on a domestic flight. The time on the flight flew. And the reason behind this is its simple yet engaging build up of suspense. Suzanne Main writes in a way that feels real, capturing how kids actually think and speak. Quinn is not a stereotypical hero; he makes mistakes, worries, and tries to do the right thing even when he’s unsure. My students would certainly connect with this.

The Aotearoa New Zealand setting adds a sense of familiarity, from the everyday school scenes to the landscapes. But it is the creature itself that is the highlight of the story — strange; unpredictable. Themes such as courage, friendship, responsibility, and standing up for what’s right are woven naturally into the plot, making it suitable for upper primary readers who enjoy adventure with heart.

'The Hatchling' is an entertaining and cleverly written story full of mystery, danger, and humour. For students who are curious about strange creatures, who love unexpected twists, and strong character relationships. Suzanne Main has created a story that is exciting but also meaningful.
