Opening sentence
Deep in the ocean, far beyond the reach of even the brightest sun, the earth quakes.
Volcano is the latest in a series of non-fiction picture books by the award winning duo Claire Saxby and Jess Racklyeft, after their previous titles Iceberg and Tree.
This is an incredibly well-written and beautifully presented book explaining the process undertaken to form volcanoes on the sea bed. It goes on to explain how a volcanic eruption happens, in a format that is easy for younger children to understand.
Claire Saxby's lyrical non-fiction writing is a real treat, while Jess Racklyeft's multimedia illustrations of the different stages of volcano formation will captivate readers.
This book lends itself well into a few science units, not just volcanoes. It also shares the layers of the ocean and could lead to a discussion about some of the critters that live in the different layers of the ocean. This book would open the doors for many great discussions in a junior classroom.
