Opening sentence
On a summer day, the door is open, Go!
The minute you open 'Wild Summer' you are immediately invited into the garden, from the end pages of insects and foliage, to the very first text “the door is open.” The swooshing text, waving and curving, gently guiding you through fields, forest and then skyward as the words are reflective, just be you. The flora and fauna are representative of Aotearoa and the illustrations are divine. The soft palette used for the background allow the birds, insects, plants and flowers to stand out. It is a celebration of nature, of life and of childhood.
This book is a reminder that you do not need a plethora of text and rhyme and all those other features to tell a rich and moving story.
