Opening sentence
"He's not big enough to play top rugby!"
Despite belonging to a small group of people who would rather not talk or read about rugby, this paperback was to me reminiscent of the adult text 'Legacy' by James Kerr, whereby rugby, as a sport, has a lot to teach us about living and life. 'You’ll Be Right: The Damian McKenzie Story' is a readable biography that follows Damian McKenzie’s journey from growing up in rural New Zealand to becoming a successful professional rugby player. Written for younger readers, the book focuses on the importance of hard work, confidence, and perseverance.

The story shows how McKenzie's love of rugby and willingness to practise helped him improve and reach his goals. This makes the book encouraging for students, as it highlights that success comes from effort rather than natural talent alone. It is clearly written in short sections that would make it accessible for developing and reluctant readers. Rugby fans will enjoy recognising moments from his career, while others can still connect with the positive messages.

Overall, 'You’ll Be Right: The Damian McKenzie Story' is a motivating and positive read that promotes resilience and self-belief. It reflects a strong New Zealand identity that would make it a valuable addition to a school library.
