Adele Broadbent is the author of several novels for children and has published a number of educational titles with Wendy Pye Publishers and Learning Media. Too Many Secrets, the first book in her ‘Herrick’ series, was nominated in the 2011 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards and published in Finland and Sweden. Its sequel The Last Herrick Secret was launched November 2012. Her novel Just Jack was a finalist in the 2012 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards and was a Storylines Notable Book that same year. Her next novel Trouble in Time was listed in the NZ Listener's Top 50 Children's books for 2014.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Adele Broadbent is a children’s author. She has worked in administration for various businesses over the years, and has published stories in the New Zealand School Journal.

Her early book publications include, The Bike Race (2008), Ninjas! (2008) Not Exactly (2008), The Biggest Catch (2010) and The Winner Is (2010), all published by Wendy Pye Publishing.

Too Many Secrets was published by HarperCollins in 2010. Linda Hall wrote in a review for the Dominion Post’s “Your Weekend” supplement: ‘A mysterious tale of family, friendship and secrets. Expect to laugh out loud and maybe even shed a few tears. Great read.’

Johanna Knox reviewed the book for Hawkes Bay Today, ‘My inner 12-year-old girl kept my poor 41-year-old body up till 3am reading this, desperate to discover what would happen. In the acknowledgements Broadbent thanks Spinning Gold – a rare conference for New Zealand children’s authors and illustrators (…) There, Broadbent took part in a ‘pitch slam’, where writers spent 60 intense seconds pitching their work. Broadbent’s novel was one of the few snapped up by HarperCollins.’

Too Many Secrets was nominated for the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards 2011.

In 2011, Broadbent’s young adult novel Just Jack was published by HarperCollins. Reviewed in the Bay of Plenty Times, Broadbent is described as having ‘managed to combine a charming story about family, growing up and meeting challenges, with some fascinating New Zealand history… A great tale of courage speckled with humour and mystery.’ Just Jack was also reviewed on the Christchurch Kids Blog, ‘I recommend it for anyone who likes stories about horses (not just girls!), history, or disasters. 9 out of 10.’

Just Jack (HarperCollins, 2011) was a finalist in the Junior Fiction category of the 2012 New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

Her novel Trouble in Time was listed in the NZ Listener's Top 50 Children's books for 2014. In 2015, the novel became a Storylines Notable Book of the Year, and was a finalist in the LIANZA Book Awards.

Broadbent's novel for young readers Between was published in 2018 by OneTree House. In 2020, If Only was also published by OneTree House.

She works at Wardini Books, and also visits school libraries and acts as a reviewer for Wardini Books.
