ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Walker, Colin (1934-) is a writer for children and a science education consultant.
Walker was born and raised in Invercargill. He attended Teacher’s College in Dunedin and Christchurch. He went on to complete an Advanced Diploma Teaching.
Professionally Walker worked as the District Science Adviser to Schools, and as an editor and science education adviser for the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Walker is the author of several hugely successful science education series for children. His series include Concept Science (1988-1991), The Sunshine Books (1989-1992), Wonderworld (1993-1995) Concept Science (1993), Science Understanding (1992-1993), as well as Big Books (1988-1994).
Walker’s books are written for children age 5 to 16. They cover a wide range of topics including space, plants, animals, weather, change and energy. His books are written 'to help children develop understandings about the world they live in, especially the environment.' He sees his books not so much as 'squeaky green' environmental tracts as books that provide facts and information to enable children to make up their own minds.
Walker’s science books are very successful overseas. His books are used in Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Botswana, they have been translated into French, Spanish and Portuguese.
His recent publications include Our Pet Dog and its welfare (1995), and Cows and Calves (2011), co-authored with Jan Quay.
Colin Walker lives in Wellington.
