Opening sentence
Doris grew up under the warm spotlight.
Doris is a horse, born and raised in the circus environment. Each performance she dances in time with the other horses and the crowds cheer.

But one evening she wonders what would happen if she danced ‘out of step’ and out of the circus tent. She does just that and finds herself dancing in the moonlight, wildly and limbs all akimbo. Doris’ loneliness is ended when a little pony in search of a dance partner encourages Doris to go explore even further.

Sarah Jacoby has used soft whimsical illustrations in this book. The circus is all in warm red and yellow colours, but as Doris moves out into the wild the colours change abruptly to blues and purples. The colours add greatly to the mood of the book. The last few pages are a combination of all the colours, as Doris and the pony find the courage to dance to their own tune. This book is a hardback with a dustjacket in landscape format and would be a great addition to any school library.
