A 7-year old, a backpack and 3,000 km of mud, magic and adventure through New Zealand.
In 2021, seven-year-old Emilie Bruce embarked on an extraordinary 3,000-kilometre journey across New Zealand via the Te Araroa Trail. Accompanied by her mother, Emilie spent six months trekking from Cape Reinga to Bluff, navigating diverse terrains including beaches, mountains, and rivers.

The adventure had many challenges; they faced driving rain, deep mud, and dangerous river crossings. Despite the physical toll, the experience was defined by New Zealand’s stunning wildlife, the kindness of "trail angels," and a shared sense of wonder. Ultimately, their journey raised over $20,000 for the Mental Health Foundation of NZ and Federated Mountain Clubs. This inspiring story is captured in the book 'Emilie Walks Te Araroa'. Written in a diary format, the book also includes detailed photography, Emilie's original sketches, and diary entries and maps of the 2,200-kilometre walk and 800-kilometre paddle.

Emilie's book as a vibrant, accessible guide for young readers, proving that with sheer grit and determination you can do anything! I found this read truly inspiring.
