Opening sentence
I'm not a whale. I'm a submarine.
When Seagull meets whale for the first time all is not as it seems. Whale seems to think he’s a submarine. He has some features of a submarine, he can do things a submarine does. Is Whale a whale? Is Seagull safe out in the wide ocean with Whale?

This is a simple but quirky tale that will delight readers with its humour. It is cleverly written, exploring adjectives and descriptions of features. There are only two characters, and a very limited colour palette, but Nigel has brought the story to life with dynamic illustrations. The eyes will draw you into these characters as you cheer them on in their tale.

On its own this story will become a library or classroom favourite but it also has possibilities for teachers exploring narrative writing and how to draw out more descriptive details when portraying a character.

This book would work well as a read-aloud.
