The railway carriage swayed gently and clicked past the miles.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading TheCinderella Service, set in 1940s wartime New Zealand. This novel is a touching, powerful work of historical fiction that authentically brings to life a little-known chapter in our history: the story of the land girls.
The protagonist, Emerald (Emma), a 19-year-old city girl from Napier, answers the government’s call to help with the country’s labour shortage. As a result, she finds herself alone on a farm near Waipukurau where life is physically gruelling and emotionally draining, but under the quiet support of the farmer and his wife, Emma grows in confidence and resilience.
Through Emma’s eyes, Lynda Taylor paints a vivid portrait of wartime rural life—the endless chores, the loneliness, the deep friendships, and the bittersweet hope carried in letters from soldiers far away. Emma’s sweetheart, Clifford, becomes both her emotional anchor and a symbol of what the war could cost. His return on furlough is touching and realistic, showing the emotional scars war leaves behind.
This novel is perfect for young New Zealand teens, especially female readers, and adults because it brings our own history to life through a relatable, courageous character. Emma’s journey of growth, sacrifice, and quiet determination resonates deeply, especially in an age where resilience and purpose are so important. Perfect for readers who enjoy character-driven stories.
