Magical and mysterious, 'The Night Tiger' celebrates children's imagination and encourages them to feel positively about night and the arrival of the dark. This transition time can be scary for many children, and getting them to happily snuggle down in their own beds is often a challenge. This book is engaging and reassuring at the same time.
The dark, beautifully-illustrated pages complement the poetic language of the text. Ordinary domestic details become fantastical as they are touched by moonlight and dark shadows. The child imagines themself as a tiger as they “stalk the dark” and “vanquish the shadow”, accompanied by their cat. Satisfyingly, the story ends with the child and cat tucked in bed with “dreams of a pouncing, bouncing night tiger, a night tiger smile.”
