Opening sentence
The kiwi gripped a feather and was dragging it lazily through his beak when he heard the egg 'pip'.
From the moment we meet 11-year-old Ruby, hiding out in her treehouse when she is feeling overwhelmed, I could not put this book down!

Ruby is a likeable character - brave, funny, and full of heart. Along with Spider, her dog and best friend, she stumbles across a rare white kiwi chick in the forest. This meeting causes Ruby and Spider to be caught up in stopping a smuggling plan. What I really loved was how the story mixes adventure with a love for nature. The forest feels alive, full of mystery and spirit. You can tell the author cares deeply about our wildlife and the land, and that makes the story feel real and meaningful.

The characters all have their own mannerisms and a few surprises. Ruby’s mix of strength and vulnerability, her strange old doll, and the unexpected friend who helps them out —all add warmth and depth to this exciting story.

Ghost Kiwi is a beautiful Aotearoa New Zealand story full of kindness, friendship, and courage. The plot is fast-paced and fun,. making it a great read for older juniors, or to be shared as a read aloud.
